Castle of Paderne, Algarve
Publicado por: Toni Martins em 2022-02-23
The hill where Paderne Castle is located, is surrounded almost all around by the Quarteira stream, which in itself already gives it a landscape and a privileged location.
In the place where the castle is currently located, it was initially a Lusitanian fort and was later conquered by the Romans. The castle must have been built around the 11th or 12th centuries, during the period of Muslim occupation. The castle was conquered from the Moors in 1248, having been practically abandoned in the 16th century when the population moved to the place where Paderne is today. The castle was severely damaged during the 1755 earthquake and was later completely abandoned. Inside, the ruins of a chapel that was dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Assunção remain.
Today, the area surrounding the castle of Paderne is made up of several trails used by those who enjoy walking, mainly along the stream.
At the base of the castle hill there is still the watermill to the north, and to the south the medieval bridge and ruins of another watermill where you can still see the remains of an old bread oven.
